Abstract Portraits
I have been investigating pareidolia, seeing faces or pictures out of randomness. I am struck by our propensity to search out a face from random visual data and yet barely recall another person’s features. And so with this curiosity I begin these paintings, abstractly at first with color fields, and then I conjure up the features from faces I recollect. The exaggerated features in fantastic color do not presume to belong together or even resemble faces as we know them. My hope is that these paintings create curiosity about the face and about the human beings behind faces. I want to provoke your narrative for the faces.
